In 1965, Mike Sr. started Wheel Equipment Inc. out of a small warehouse behind his house. We have moved twice since then to make room for the wide variety of trailer and wheel parts our customers need.

The warehouse got bigger, but we kept the small, local way of doing business. Everyone who walks in is treated like family. Mike Sr.'s sons run the company and his grandson is our General Manager.

Our associates know how to keep trailer running gear in top shape. Parts supply has been uneven across every industry, and we work with our vendors to get items in stock as soon as possible. Whatever the availability, we will keep you informed.

Our Tucson warehouse is 15,000 square feet and stocked with more than 18,000 items for landscape, flatbed, boat, horse and travel trailers.

Trailer parts questions

Quick answers on axles, hubs, brakes and lights. Not sure what fits your trailer? Bring the old part in and we will match it.

Which axle do I need?

It depends on your trailer's weight capacity, how you use it and its frame setup. A straight axle gives more ground clearance and stability. A drop axle lowers the deck for easier loading and unloading.

What is the difference between a drop axle and a straight axle?

On a straight axle the spindles line up with the axle tube. On a drop axle the tube hangs below the spindles, so the trailer deck sits lower.

How do I choose the right axles for my trailer?

Consider trailer weight, load capacity, axle type (straight or drop), axle spacing and fit with your trailer frame.

How do I measure the bolt pattern for my trailer's hubs?

On 4, 6 and 8 lug hubs, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. Your bolt pattern is the lug count plus that distance, for example 5 on 4.5 inches. A 5 lug hub has no hole directly across, so bring the hub in and we will measure it.

What are electric brakes and hydraulic brakes for trailers?

Electric brakes use an electrical signal from the tow vehicle to apply the trailer brakes. Hydraulic brakes use pressure from a brake actuator on the trailer.

Can I use trailer lights on a boat trailer?

Yes, but choose lights made for marine use so water exposure does not cause corrosion or damage.

How do I troubleshoot trailer light problems?

The usual causes are burned-out bulbs, wiring problems and faulty connectors. Check each light, inspect the wiring and use a tester to find the fault.

How do I prevent rust and corrosion on running gear?

Clean it regularly, store the trailer properly and apply a rust-resistant coating.

What are the main parts of a trailer's running gear?

Axles, suspension (leaf springs, torsion axles and similar), wheels, tires, hubs, bearings, brakes and related hardware.

How do I read a trailer tire size like ST235/80R16?

ST means special trailer tire. 235 is the width in millimeters, 80 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R means radial and 16 is the wheel diameter in inches.

How do I find my axle's weight rating?

Look for a label on the axle or trailer frame. If it is missing or hard to read, bring the hub or a photo and we can help you identify it.

How often should I repack trailer wheel bearings?

A common guideline is once a year or about every 12,000 miles, but follow your axle maker's instructions. Boat trailers that get dunked often need attention more often.

Do you carry parts for boat, horse and landscape trailers?

Yes. We supply axles, hubs, bearings, brakes, lights, tires and wheels for boat, horse, landscape, flatbed and travel trailers. If we do not carry a part, we can order it or point you to the right place.

Shelves of trailer hubs and brake drums in the warehouse

I was in a bind and needed brake parts for my camper. Wheel Equipment was the only store in town who had parts in stock and also was very fairly priced.

Showroom wall of trailer hardware, locks, chains and accessories

These guys know trailers. I've rebuilt a couple of trailers and they have everything you need. I also built a trailer and they helped me select the appropriate axle, suspension, and running gear.
